# Submit Actions

Submit actions are what happens when a visitor sends your form: send an email, save the submission, add the visitor to your mailing list, and so on. A form can have as many actions as you need. They run in order, from top to bottom.

A form with no actions saves nothing and sends nothing. Add at least **Save Submission** if you want to see the answers under **CraftForms → Submissions**.

### Add an action

1. Open the form and select the **Form** tab in the settings sidebar.
2. Open the **Submit Actions** panel and click **Add Action**.
3. In the **Select Action Type** window, click an action. You can search the list, like "Mailchimp".
4. Fill in the action's settings and save. Required settings must be filled in for the action to work.

Each action in the list can be edited, moved up or down, or removed. Order matters: an email that should include a PDF or data from a webhook must come after the action that produces it.

### Available actions

**Core**

| Action                      | What it does                                                                                                                                                                                |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Send Email (Plain Text)** | Sends a plain text email. Leave the body empty to list all submitted fields.                                                                                                                |
| **Send Email (Template)**   | Sends an HTML email built with an [email template](https://kb.craftformswp.com/documentation/email-templates/create-email-template).                                                        |
| **Save Submission**         | Saves the submission, so it appears under **CraftForms → Submissions**. Can also [capture abandoned forms](https://kb.craftformswp.com/documentation/form-building/abandoned-form-capture). |
| **Send Webhook**            | Posts the submission to any URL as JSON or form-encoded data. Use it to connect Zapier, Make, n8n or your own app.                                                                          |
| **User Registration** `PRO` | Registers a new WordPress user from form data.                                                                                                                                              |
| **Create Post** `PRO`       | Creates a new post of any public post type (post, page, custom post type) from form data.                                                                                                   |

**Email marketing**

| Action        | What it does                                                                                         |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Mailchimp** | Adds or updates a contact in a Mailchimp audience. Needs a Mailchimp connection.                     |
| **Brevo**     | Adds or updates a contact in Brevo lists. Needs a Brevo connection.                                  |
| **FluentCRM** | Adds or updates a contact in FluentCRM. Shown only when the FluentCRM plugin is active on your site. |
| **MailPoet**  | Adds a subscriber to MailPoet lists. Shown only when the MailPoet plugin is active on your site.     |

On the free version, **User Registration** and **Create Post** are listed with a **PRO** badge, but they can't be saved.

### Send Email (Plain Text)

Set **Send To**, **Subject** and **Body**. **Reply To**, **From** and the **Attach PDF(s)**, **Attach files** and **Attach booking calendar invite (.ics)** options are optional. Both email actions can insert submitted values, like `{{field.email}}`.

### Send Email (Template)

Choose an existing [email template](https://kb.craftformswp.com/documentation/email-templates/create-email-template). Its subject, recipients and other settings are set on the template's own edit page.

#### Sending through your own mail server (SMTP)

Both email actions have a **Use custom SMTP server** option. Tick it and pick an **SMTP Server** you added under **CraftForms → SMTP Servers**. Without it, the email goes out the way your WordPress site normally sends mail. For the right ports and From address, see [SMTP tips](/documentation/email-templates/smtp-servers-tips.md).

### Save Submission

Saves the submitted data. Optional: **Capture abandoned submissions** and **Attach PDF(s)**, which attaches generated PDFs to the saved submission.

### User Registration `PRO`

Registers a new WordPress user from form data.

Choose the new user's role and map form fields to user fields and custom user meta.

### Create Post `PRO`

Creates a new WordPress post from form data.

Choose the post type and post status, then map form fields to post fields, custom fields and taxonomies.

### Send Webhook

Posts the submission to any URL as a JSON or form-encoded payload. See the [payload reference](https://kb.craftformswp.com/documentation/form-building/create-form/form-settings-post-context/submit-actions/send-webhook-action-payload-reference) for what your endpoint receives.

Optional settings: a **Secret Key** to sign each request, a **Context Prefix** to use the endpoint's JSON reply in later actions (like `{{webhook.order_id}}`), and **Required (abort on failure)** to stop the remaining actions when the webhook fails.

### Run only if

Every action has a **Run only if** setting. Leave it empty and the action always runs. Pick a choice field and a value, and the action runs only when the visitor chose it: for example, add them to Mailchimp only when they ticked "Send me the newsletter". ### Flow `PRO`

Under the actions, **Then run a flow** connects one of your [flows](https://kb.craftformswp.com/documentation/form-building/flows) to the form. Choose **Run after the actions above** or **Replace the actions above**. When a flow replaces them, the actions are kept but don't run.
